Moto GP - champion's choice

Proton Team KR, the only independent team taking part in the current motorcycle Grand Prix season, has selected Delcam's CADCAM software for the further development of its race machines. From the Power Solution range, Team KR will be using the hybrid modelling software, PowerSHAPE, and the reverse engineering system, CopyCAD, for the development of complex-shaped components, including engine ports and fairings, plus the PowerMILL machining program for the production of parts, tooling, jigs and fixtures.

Unlike the other teams, which race on bikes supplied by the major Japanese manufacturers, Team KR develops its own unique racing designs. The crucial difference is the use of the team’s own three-cylinder engine. The resulting KR3 machine’s light weight gives superior cornering.

Proton Team KR is owned and managed by biking legend, Kenny Roberts. As a rider, he stormed through American racing to become Grand National champion twice. Then he came to Europe to do the same thing in the World Championship – winning from 1978 to 1980. After his retirement, he moved into team ownership, and took two more riders to four more World Championships.

In 1996, Kenny Roberts set out to become a racing bike manufacturer in his own right. After three seasons, Team Roberts, which now has Malaysian car manufacturer Proton as its main sponsor, is competing strongly with the established teams.

During this period, the team’s manufacturing facility outside Banbury in England has grown such that the staff can now handle almost all design, manufacture and construction in-house. The company also uses these facilities to act as a high-level engineering consultancy to other teams and manufacturers

"In motorcycle Grand Prix, the difference in lap time between the fastest and slowest rider is only a few seconds,” explained Team Manager, Chuck Aksland. "With the addition of the Delcam software, we expect to be able to improve both the efficiency of our engines and the overall aerodynamics of our machines, and so gain the small, but vital, performance enhancements we need.”
